Just like other historical sites in Kingstown, St. Vincent, Fort Charlotte was only completed in 1806. The place was named after the wife of King George III, Charlotte. A few centuries ago, this military post housed hundreds of canons and stirred fear in the minds of many. Efforts to build the fort happened shortly after the British took control of the country to oversee affairs and defend from French attackers, Carib conflicts, and slaves suspected of inciting rebellion.
At one point, the fort was used to house lepers, prisoners, and the mentally ill. Now that it is no longer used for military purposes and rarely for disciplinary purposes, the place has been opened for tourists who want a panoramic view of the whole territory of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Though there are still some cannons in the fort, there’s no need to feel intimidated as these are only for display.
These days, one of the old barracks has been transformed into a museum that showcases art from the Garifuna featuring their history. The place is also home to Fort Charlotte Light, a landmark to those who are entering the capital of Kingstown. The site also houses the country’s coast guard and signal station.
Those who want to go beyond the usual island-hopping trip can spend a day exploring this historic site. An exhibit of St. Vincent’s rich history and culture, it is a must-see place. Tourists entering the country through Kingston can choose to make a stop at this fort to get a glimpse of the many islands that are part of the country.
